Quadratus Femoris : one of six Hip lateral rotators

Happy Muscle Monday! Another deep hip rotator! Today we're talkin' QUADRATUS FEMORIS, not to be confused with thigh muscle Rectus Femoris, (one of your Quads!)
Quadratus Femoris stretches between your sits (butt) bone and femur (thight bone!)

Quadratus: refers to its 4-sided rectangular shape.

Femoris:  attaches to the femur bone

QUADRATUS FEMORIS  MUSCLE ATTACHMENT POINTS:

ORIGIN:  Lateral border of the ischial tuberosity
INSERTION:  Intertrochanteric crest of the femur (between the lesser & greater trochanters)

QUADRATUS FEMORIS MUSCLE ACTION:

Lateral Rotation of the Thigh at the Hip Joint
It also assists in Adduction of the thigh at the hip joint

Lateral Rotation of the thigh at the hip joint (standing)
Thigh Adduction

saving the most popular hip rotator for last : PIRIFORMIS
See you next week!

Obturator EXTERNUS: one of Six hip Lateral Rotators

We're back with another hip rotator ! Another "Obturator"! Last week was Internus, this week:

Obturator Externus

 Obturator Externus Muscle Attachment Points

Origin: Superior and Inferior Rami of Pubis
Insertion: Trochanteric fossa of femur

Obturator Externus Muscle Action:

Lateral Rotation of the the thigh @ the hip joint (aka - laterally rotates the hip)

Standing Lateral Rotation -aka- External rotation

This is fun ! Play with Lateral (and Medial!) hip rotation yourself!

Obturator Externus is one of Six deep Hip Lateral rotators.
(which we've covered!)
and only two more to go! : Quadratus Femoris & Piriformis !

until next week! take it easy.....

Obturator Internus - 1 of 6 deep lateral rotators of the hip

We're back with another deep hip lateral rotater! Obturator Internus:

Muscle Attachment Points

ORIGIN:  Internal surface of the obturator foramen and the obturator membrane

Insertion:  Greater Trochanter of the femur

 Muscle Actions

lateral rotation of the thigh @the hip joint

Doesn't Obturator Internus sound like the name of a Transformer or something?

 #robots in disguise

Next week: Obturator EXTERNUS !

Superior Gemellus: 1 of SIX (deep) Lateral Rotators of the Hip

We're back with our 2nd of SIX deep lateral rotators of the hip!
Last week we started with INFERIOR Gemellus & today we will be talking about
SUPERIOR GEMELLUS.

Six deep Lateral Rotators of the Hip: 1. Piriformis 2. Superior Gemellus 3. Obturator Internus 4. Inferior Gemellus  5. Obturator Externus 6. Quadratus Femoris

Superior Gemellus

Superior: meaning "above" (and also a hint that there may be an "inferior" version of this muscle)
Gemellus : Latin root for 'born together' or 'twins' (another hint that this muscle has another version, a buddy!

Superior Gemellus Muscle Attachment Points

Origin: Ischial Spine
Insertion: Greater Trochanter of the femur

 Superior Gemellus Muscle Actions

Lateral Rotation (aka external rotation)
of the thigh (femur bone) at the Hip Joint

Next week we'll discuss which hip rotator lives sandwiched in between the Gemelli !:
OBTURATOR INTERNUS

Inferior Gemellus - 1 of 6 HIP Lateral Rotators

We're still in the hip!
So we've covered the three Glutes (or - gluteals ) but underneath them live SIX small muscles that sit  deep & horizontally and all do the same action - starting with: Inferior Gemellus! read on !

Love this drawing of Inferior Gemellus by "Rasche" who I couldn't find anywhere online but this image links back to Michigan University.

Inferior: meaning "below" (and also a hint that there may be "superior" version of this muscle)
Gemellus : Latin root for 'born together' or 'twins' (another hint that this muscle has another version, a buddy -also.. Gem > Gemini > twins?!

 Inferior Gemellus Muscle Attachment Points

Origin: Ischial Tuberosity (the upper portion)
Insertion: Greater Trochanter of the femur (the upper border)

 Inferior Gemellus Muscle Actions

Lateral Rotation (aka external rotation)
of the thigh (femur bone) at the Hip Joint

Next week: SUPERIOR GEMELLUS

I'll leave you with this - because I can't Gemellus without thinking
JEM !
